The epitome of a Borders tower or castle. A 14th Century L plan tower which dominates the narrow gorgeof the River Tweed just to the west of Peebles, it measures18m by 12m with a height of 18m to the parapet and has walls which are over 3m thick. It was enlarged in 1654 with the addition of stables and terraced gardens. The gateway keystone has the crest of the Hays, Earls of Tweeddale. In 1795 William Douglas, the 4th Duke of Queensberry, who was notorious for his gambling and debauchery, cut down and sold all the woodland around the castle before it passed to the entailed heir the 8th Earl of Wemyss.
