Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dormant cyst of a golden-brown alga (class Chrysophyceae) from wet soil in the Northern Black Forest National Park, Germany. It is surrounded by bacteria. Chrysophyceae are micro-algae with flagella that are used for locomotion. In adverse conditions they form cysts contained in a siliceous membrane and become dormant.
