A description will be given of the method of fitting the taperedend and from this it will not be difficult to see what treatment shouldbe given the cylindrical end. The first step is to fit the tap-ered end of the rod into thehole in the crosshead so that thetwo parts will bear evenly andfully on the surfaces whichtouch each other and so that, when pushed together by hand, there will be a slight space be-tween the end of the crossheadboss and the shoulder on the space is for the draw and will be taken up when the key isdriven in thereby providing a snug, tightly fitting joint. The amountallowed for this draw will vary with the size of the rod and thedegree of taper. On large diameter rods not so much would be allowedas on small rods.
