Norwegian scabies: scabies rash on the hand of a person suffering from AIDS. Scabies is a skin infection caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The infection is typified by severe itching, particularly at night, due to secretions from the burrowing mite. Female mites burrow under the skin to lay their eggs; on hatching the young migrate rapidly from person to person by contact. The mites are killed by treatment with hexachlorophane or benzyl benzoate lotions applied locally. Scabies is especially severe in AIDS because the sufferer lacks a viable immune system with which to fight off the infestation.
