Each internal intercostal muscle {tn. intercostalis internus) arisesfrom the costal cartilage and the medial margin of the costal groove THE DIAPHRAGM 167 and passes downward and dorsally to be inserted into the superiormargin of the costal cartilage and rib beneath. It extends to theangle of the rib only and the remainder of the intercostal space isspanned by the dorsal intercostal aponeurosis. The mm. levatores costarum are twelve in number arising fromthe transverse processes of the seventh cervical and the first eleventhoracic vertebrae; each is inserted into the rib dorsal to the angle. The mm. subcostales are on the medial surfaces of the inferior ribsnear their angles. These are in series with the internal intercostalmuscles.
