The lirst ofthe consolidation and ten wbecl enginesthen appeared. They weighed about 60tons and with the lirst and third drivershaving plain tires these engines couldreadily round the sharpest curves. In the early 8os the necessity for stilllarger locomotive became greater withthe rapidly increasing volume of trans-portation and previous to 1890, overone hundred ten wheel locomotives forboth passenger and freight service weresupplied to the syr-tcm. besides a num-. In1898 the first engines built with caststeel frames were furnished to thec^iiiipany by the Baldvjin LocomotiveWorks. The weight of the locomotiveshad now reached to 80 tons and it wasthen thought that the limit of weighthad been reached, but in the meantimea rapid developrnent in the weight andpower of heavy freight locomotiveswas taking place. The balanced com-pound was coming into favor and of and 54 minutes, averaging perhour. Ihis feat is not rivalled by anyrecord of long distance running, andrcllects the highest credit on the enter-prise of the railway company and theadmirable constructive ability of theBaldwin Works.
